The Esophageal and Airway Center at Primary Children’s Hospital is a multidisciplinary center, in partnership with the University of Utah School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, that specializes in the coordinated care and treatment of congenital or acquired conditions causing complications with the throat, esophagus, and airway.

Our center coordinates care between surgery, ENT, gastroenterology, pulmonology, and swallowing experts. We help and support patients and families from diagnosis through surgery and long term follow-up, including outpatient therapy.

Dr. Douglas Barnhart

Dr. Douglas Barnhart’s daily clinical practice includes all common pediatric surgical problems including inguinal hernias, undescended testicles, hydroceles, and feeding access (gastrostomy tube placement).

He has a particular interest in minimal access surgery including the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, congenital lung lesions, and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). In addition to treating common problems, he has several areas of focus. He is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group with a particular interest in renal tumors (Wilms tumor) and neuroblastoma.

Feeding access and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux in children with neurologic problems is also an area of special interest in Dr. Barnhart’s practice and academic work. Dr. Barnhart sees patients at Primary Children’s Hospital, Primary Children’s-Riverton, and Utah Valley in Provo, UT.

One of his goals is to work with parents to shorten hospital stays for children. Dr. Barnhart’s clinical interests also include the following conditions: Inguinal hernia, Umbilical hernia, Undescended testicle, Hydrocele, Cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder), Gastrostomy (placement of a stomach tube), Appendectomy (removal of the appendix), Vascular access (ports and central lines), Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum), Pediatric endocrine surgery (thyroid and adrenal tumors/pancreas surgery)

Dr. Eckhauser

Dr. Eckhauser is a highly experienced Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgeon who has a reputation for excellent outcomes.

He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Utah’s School of Medicine. As a master teacher, he also realizes the importance of continuing to learn himself and this pursuit has been fueled by a desire to improve the lives of those with heart disease.

Much of his research is focused on quality improvement and refining the effectiveness of surgical strategies. He cares for patients of all ages with congenital heart defects and has a special interest in pediatric heart failure, transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support.

 

 

Dr. Smith

Will see patients with throat disorders, including Voice/Airway/Swallowing Disorders. He participates in the Voice Disorders Clinic (a multi-disciplinary clinic with speech pathology) and the Airway Disorders Clinic (with pulmonary medicine), and treats conditions such as: chronic hoarseness, vocal nodules/polyps, spasmodic dysphonia, vocal fold paralysis, professional voice problems, singers with voice problems. Airway problems include stenosis, paralysis scar, and tracheostomy problems. Pediatric patients with voice disorders can be seen at Primary Children’s Hospital

Brian M. McGinley, MD

As the Medical Director of the Pediatric Sleep Program, his specific clinical interests are sleep-disordered breathing in children, and difficulty with daytime sleepiness, and inability to sleep during the night.

RAZA PATEL, MD, MPH

Dr. Raza A. Patel received his master’s degree in public health and his medical degree at the University Of Utah School Of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at SUNY at Buffalo at the Women and Children´s Hospital of Buffalo. Dr. Patel is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology and has been clinical faculty at the University of Utah since 2011.

Dr. Patel is an Assistant Professor (Clinical) of Pediatrics at the University of Utah and is director of the Pediatric Endoscopy Unit where he provides advanced endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. He also staffs the Esophageal and Airway Center.

His clinical and research interests include esophageal diseases and disorders. He has published many gastroenterology journal articles and book chapters.
